The Career Development Practice program consists of the ten required courses listed below. You may take courses individually for interest, or successfully complete all of them to receive a certificate. If you are interested in receiving the certificate, you must apply to the program.

Course Descriptions

Develop practical skills necessary to assist people in obtaining employment. Examine the听 social听and听psychological effects of unemployment;听focus听on听counselling techniques, communication skills, empowering and motivating clients.

Learn the Canadian Standards and Guidelines, Code of Ethics and apply the Ethical Decision听Making process to case studies.

Practice the art of composing resumes and cover听letters. Learn how to coach clients on the basics of听how to highlight skills and target resumes and听cover letters that get results.

Examine the history of career development and learn about historical and emerging career development theories. Practice applying these theories through discussions, scenarios & case studies.

Learn to use key tools and techniques to assess personality, abilities, interests, transferable skills, values and employment barriers. Create individualized action plans, including assessment data and occupational research.

Learn essential and innovative facilitation skills to work with groups using effective communication skills and creating a positive job search environment through useful techniques for diverse client groups.

Learn how to recognize disabling conditions and how rehabilitation counselling can assist people with physical, mental, developmental, and cognitive disabilities to achieve their personal and career goals in the most integrated setting possible.

Learn about the history and future of work, consumption and demographics. Look at local and global labour market trends to help forecast where employment needs will be in different communities.

Gain knowledge and skills necessary to identify and assist with the specific challenges facing adults who are experiencing career transition. Topics include handling loss and change, problem solving, decision making and building self-esteem.

Learn the career development case management听process from intake to file closure. Learn about听the role barriers play in both the client return to听work process and the employment counselling听process.

Learn about winning interview skills, practice these skills, and coach others to improve and be effective in presenting their skills and experience to meet the needs of the employer.
