Course Description

This online intensive, self-study course starts with a review of the nursing process and the health care of seniors. The remainder of the course covers the nursing care of adults with the following disorders and conditions: neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, gastro-intestinal, endocrine, urinary, cancer, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV infection. Specific conditions addressed include: seizure disorders, Parkinson鈥檚, multiple sclerosis, brain injuries, CVA, hypertension, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, C.O.P.D., TB, fractures, degenerative joint disease, rheumatoid arthritis, gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis, biliary and pancreatic disorders, diabetes and thyroid disorders, cystitis, pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis, breast and prostate cancer, specific sexually transmitted infections and AIDS.

 

RNs and RPNs may register for specific professional development purposes, or as part of the Psychiatric Nursing Refresher certificate program. Students interested in completing a certificate program must apply for admission and be accepted into the program. Details of the required documents and program application forms are available on the program web page. Please note that a maximum of one course completed for professional development may be applied toward satisfaction of certificate program requirements.

For course taken on a stand-alone basis:  proof of RPN license status and/or proof of RPN program completion with transcript or copy of diploma/degree.

  • physical assessment / health care of seniors;
  • 路nursing the client with
    • oneurological conditions;
    • respiratory conditions;
    • cardiovascular conditions;
    • musculoskeletal conditions;
    • gastrointestinal conditions;
    • regulatory disorders;
    • urinary and reproductive concerns; and
    • infection, HIV, STI, cancer.

Instruction Method

Interactive online course in Blackboard

 

Due to the nature of an online delivery, the student will be expected be proficient in computer skills including email, adding attachments, navigating the internet etc. Resources for getting started with Blackboard are available online to help get the student comfortable in the Blackboard environment.

Grading

Students must get 65% or higher on all unit exams in order to pass. 

 

This course may be taken independently or as part of the Psychiatric Nursing Refresher Certificate program.

To register, email cehs@douglascollege.ca with your registration request and proof of completion of the pre-requisite requirements.  You will then be prompted for payment to the CE Registration office, to finalize your registration. Payment of the tuition fee must accompany registration.
