Health Information Management

Health Information Management combines aspects of computer science, business, health and research in a rewarding, fast-paced environment. We offer two Health Information Management programs: a Bachelor of Science, which is the first of its kind in Canada, and a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma.聽

Graduate job-ready into high-paying, high-opportunity fields with the Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management (BSc-HIM). You鈥檒l take part in two internships as well as a 180-hour supervised practicum are built right into the program, meaning you鈥檒l graduate with experience in the field. The Health Information Management degree is also eligible for Co-operative Education.聽

The first of its kind in Canada, the Health Information Management degree teaches you practical knowledge in health information science, business leadership, project management, information technology and more. In your third year, choose from concentrations in Information Intelligence, Operational Leadership and Management or take the General stream.聽聽聽

Once you graduate you鈥檒l be eligible to write the national certification exam for the . With certification you鈥檒l have the option to work across Canada, in the United States or Australia 鈥 provided you submit a college transcript and then write a certification exam for the country you want to work in.聽

If you don鈥檛 have the prerequisites for the BSc-HIM we offer a Certificate in Academic Foundations for Potential Health Information Management Applicants, consisting of 10 courses that all transfer into the degree.聽聽

The two-year Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Health Information Management is the only program of its kind in British Columbia. You鈥檒l take practical health information management courses that cover topics in health information science, business leadership, project management and information technology.聽

During the program, you鈥檒l put your skills to work with four practicums. You'll also complete a six-week project where you are placed in various departments within the health-care sector, such as health informatics, data analytics, information governance, management or quality improvement.聽

Once you graduate you鈥檒l be eligible to write the national certification exam for the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA). Benefits of joining CHIMA include networking with professionals, seeing the latest in research and best practices, using professional designations that will make you stand out in the job market and more.聽

This program requires that you have a bachelor's degree from a Canadian institution or recognized international academic institution. Prerequisite courses are also necessary for program entry.聽

Why study health information management?

Every hospital, government and health care provider has to be accountable. That's where the health information management professional comes in, keeping a record of every health condition and service performed in our health care system.聽

A complex, international coding system is used. The information is entered into a national database. Hospitals, governments and the Canadian Institute of Health Information use the database to compile reports as a basis for health care decisions on everything from how to manage waitlists for surgery to understanding the overall health of Canadians.聽
